Mike Jones' wrestling career started to take off in
Memphis, TN where he won the International Title from Fred
Ottman (then wrestling as Big Bubba) in early 1987. Later
that year, he teamed with Rocky Johnson to win the
Southern Tag Team Titles from Big Bubba and Goliath.
Jones and Johnson held the belts for less than a month before
dropping them to Chick Donovan and Jack Hart.
Jones' jumped into the national spotlight
when he began working for the World Wrestling Federation (WWF)
as Virgil, bodyguard and manservant to "The Million Dollar
Man" Ted DiBiase. Virgil (his
name a jab at WCW booker Dusty Rhodes) performed
whatever task was demanded of him by DiBiase and was always
ready to take a beating for DiBiase. On occasion, Virgil
even joined DiBiase in the ring as his tag team partner.
However over time, DiBiase's demands of
Virgil grew more and more outrageous. Finally Virgil had
had enough of DiBiase and in 1991, he laid out DiBiase with
the Million Dollar Belt. "Rowdy" Roddy Piper admired
Virgil's gutsiness in standing up to DiBiase and he helped
train Virgil so he would be prepared for DiBiase in the
ring. DiBiase and Virgil squared off at Wrestlemania VII
with Virgil winning by count-out. At SummerSlam
that year, Virgil met DiBiase with the Million Dollar belt on
the line. Virgil fought hard and DiBiase knew he was in
trouble. DiBiase tried to get himself disqualified so he
could hold on to the Million Dollar Belt but the referee was
on to DiBiase's game and he refused to disqualify
DiBiase. In the end, DiBiase was upset by Virgil, losing
the Million Dollar Belt in the process.
Virgil eventually lost the Million Dollar
Belt back to DiBiase and he eventually faded from sight in the
WWF. However in 1996, he showed up in World Championship
Wrestling (WCW) as head of security for the New World
Order. Jones was now known as Vincent (a jab at WWF
owner Vince McMahon). Vincent stuck with the NWO,
working with NWO Hollywood when the faction split into two.
After the NWO broke up in 1999, he joined the West Texas
Rednecks as Curly Bill. He later worked for WCW as Mike
Jones and left the company in 2000.
Mike Jones continues to work as a wrestler
and can be found in the independent wrestling
scene.
