NAME: THE HONKY TONK MAN AKA WAYNE FERRIS

REAL NAME: WAYNE FERRIS

HOMETOWN: MEMPHIS, TN

FINISHING MOVE: SHAKE, RATTLE, AND ROLL (NECK BREAKER)

Before he became known as "The greatest Intercontinental Champion of all time", Wayne Ferris wrestled in Memphis with his real-life cousin Jerry "The King" Lawler in the Championship Wrestling Association.

Ferris debuted in the WWF as a singing babyface called the Honkey Tonk Man (HTM)  but it soon became clear that the fans did not like him and despite his plea for cheers, he was booed wherever he wrestled.  In an attempt to salvage his image, a vote of confidence was held with the WWF fans.  Unfortunately for "Honkey", the majority of fans gave him a thumbs down.

Despite the vote of no confidence, the HTM seemed oblivious to the fans' boos.  After every match, he would sing and dance for them followed with an outpouring of appreciation by him, thanking the fans for being a beautiful audience.  Soon after, HTM took on the managerial services of "The Mouth of the South" Jimmy Hart with Hart being nicknamed "The Colonel" by the HTM.

During an appearance on Jake Roberts' talk segment "The Snake Pit", the HTM was ridiculed by Roberts for his outrageous behavior and lack of musical talent.  The HTM stormed off the set only to sneak up behind Roberts and break a guitar over his head.  This led to a short feud between Roberts and the HTM, culminating in a match at Wrestlemania III.  While the HTM won the match, Roberts gained a measure of revenge by humiliating HTM's manager after the match.

After Wrestlemania III, the HTM stunned the wrestling world when he upset Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat to become the new Intercontinental Champion.  Despite stiff competition, the HTM managed to hold on to the belt.  He became so hated that WWF fans turned the once hated "Macho Man" Randy Savage face when the HTM began battling Savage.

While many fans believed the HTM's title reign would be short, he proved to be a resilient champion (as well as a big draw for the WWF).   After a 15 month reign as the IC champion, the Honky Tonk Man fell to the power of the Ultimate Warrior.  Honky was scheduled to defend the belt against Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake but an attack by Ron Bass sidelined Beefcake.  The ever cocky HTM issued an open challenge to anyone in the dressing room and he soon paid for the mistake with his title.  The Ultimate Warrior raced into the ring and destroyed the HTM in 35 seconds, winning the IC Title.

In an attempt to rebound from the title loss, the Colonel teamed Honkey up with Greg "The Hammer" Valentine.  The two former IC champs formed a tag team called Rhythm and Blues.  The normally straight-laced Valentine went so far as to dye his hair black as a show of solidarity.  However the team was not destined to last long and the two split, Valentine turning babyface in the process.

The HTM resurfaced in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1994 where he worked a short program against WCW Television Champion Johnny B. Badd.  However a reported dispute over pay led to his departure from the promotion.

Since then, the HTM has worked the independent circuit as well as making occasional appearances in the WWE.  Honkey surprised fans when he showed up at the 2001 Royal Rumble.  His return was brief however and he soon found himself tossed out of the ring by Kane.

Over the last few years, Wayne Ferris has engaged in an online feud with his cousin Jerry "The King" Lawler.
