Originally started as a
copy of the Fabulous Ones, the Rock and Roll Express
would go on to become one of the most successful
tag teams of the 1980's and spawn a number of
imiators. The May 1985 issue of Pro Wrestling
Illustrated discussed a rumor that the Fabulous Ones and
the Rock-n-Roll Express would exchange partners and form
new teams. |
In 1983, Ricky
Morton and Robert Gibson were teamed up in an effort to
duplicate the success of the Fabulous Ones. Known as the
Rock-n-Roll Express, they battled with some of the top teams
of Championship Wrestling Association (CWA) including Randy
"Macho Man" Savage and his brother Lanny Poffo. During a
match against Poffo and Savage, Ricky Morton was piledrived
through a bench by Randy Savage. In the CWA, Morton and Gibson
won the Southern Tag Team Championship on two separate
occasions. Their first reign began in January 1983 when
they defeated Porkchop Cash and Troy Graham before dropping
the belts to the Bruise Brothers. In August 1984 the
Rock-n-Roll Express earned their second Southern Tag Team
Championship when they beat Phil Hickerson and the
Spoiler . Ironically, both title reigns lasted but a
week. This was just the beginning for Morton and
Gibson's title wins.
The
Rock-n-Roll Express' popularity soared when they appeared in
Mid-South Wrestling (MSW). In MSW they began a
long-running feud against the Midnight Express. This
feud would go on to span many years and promotions as
well. Morton and Gibson would win the Mid-South Tag Team
Championship from the Midnight Express on two separate
occasions (May 2, 1984 and October 1, 1984). They earned
their third Mid-South Tag Team Championship on Christmas Day
1984 when they defeated the team of Hercules Hernandez and Ted DiBiase. The Rock-n-Roll Express
kept the belts for nearly five months before dropping them to
Ted DiBiase and Steve "Dr. Death" Williams.
As the Rock-n-Roll
Express' fame spread through North America, it only seemed a
matter of time before they would begin competing on the
national scene. In 1985 the Rock-n-Roll Express entered
World Championship Wrestling (WCW) where they quickly worked
their way into contention for the National Wrestling Alliance
(NWA) World Tag Team Championship. For the next two
years, Morton and Gibson would dominate the tag team scene in
WCW. On July 9, 1985, the Rock-n-Roll Express battled
their way past Krusher Krushchev and Ivan Koloff to score their first NWA
World Tag Team Championship. The Rock-n-Roll Express
defended the belts against some of the top teams in the world
before dropping the belts to Ivan and Nikita Koloff on October
13, 1985. However they quickly rebounded, winning back
the belts on November 28, 1985.
When the
Rock-n-Roll Express' longtime rivals the Midnight Express arrived
in WCW, fans knew that it would only be a matter of time
before the two teams battled over the NWA Tag Titles. On
February 2, 1986, the Midnight Express defeated Morton and
Gibson for the tag titles. The two teams would feud for
months before Morton and Gibson regained the belts on August
16, 1986. On December 6, 1986 the Rock-n-Roll Express
were defeated by Paul Jones' team of Manny Fernandez and "Ravishing" Rick
Rude. The Rock
and Roll Express' last World Tag Team Championship came to an
end on September 29, 1987 when they fell to the team of Tully
Blanchard and Arn Anderson.
In a shocking
turn of events, Ricky Morton turned on Robert Gibson and
joined the York Foundation where he wrestled as Richard
Morton. Eventually the two reconciled and reformed the
Rock-n-Roll Express.
During the early 90's the
Rock-n-Roll Express worked in Smokey Mountain Wrestling (SMW)
where they won they feuded with the Heavenly Bodies over the
SMW Tag Team Titles. Morton and Gibson held the SMW
tag belts on ten separate occasions and battled teams such as
the Bruise Brothers, the Gangstas, and Brian Lee/Chris Candido
over the belts.
When the World Wrestling Federation
(WWF) joined forces with the NWA, the Rock-n-Roll Express made
a brief appearance in the WWF in 1998, the only time they
worked in the WWF. During the Monday Night War, the
Rock-n-Roll Express returned to WCW for an uneventful
run.
Since then, the Rock-n-Roll
Express has wrestled on the indie circuit where they
continue to feud with their longtime foes the Midnight
Express.
