REAL NAME: ANGELO

|
Angelo
Poffo's first claim to fame came during World War II when he
broke the U.S. Navy's sit-up record by performing 6,033
consecutive sit-ups (a risky endeavor given the fact that one
aspirant to the title died from an aortic blood vessel
bursting while he attempted the Herculean task). While
he served in the U.S. Navy, Poffo worked out with weights and
developed an impressive physique.
Poffo took up
wrestling and appeared on the Dumont Network (during the
wrestling craze of the 50's). eventually winning the United
States TV Title from Wilbur Snyder.
Poffo continued
wrestling through the 60's and 70's and eventually formed the
outlaw promotion known as International Championship Wrestling
(ICW). Poffo's sons Lanny Poffo and Randy Savage (aka Randy Poffo) took up
the family mantle, competing in the ICW.
After the demise of
the ICW, Angelo joined his sons Lanny and Randy in
Mid-Southern Wrestling in Memphis, TN where he managed the
Macho Man.
During the early 1990's,
Poffo was inducted into the World Championship Wrestling Hall
of Fame where he was involved in an angle where he was
attacked by Ric
"Nature Boy" Flair, setting up a feud between Flair
and Randy Savage. | SOURCES:
