If
ever the old adage "It's not the size of the dog in the fight,
it's the size of the fight in the dog" applied to a wrestler,
it had to be "Superstar" Bill Dundee. With a height of
just 5'5", Dundee wrestled with the heart of a giant and
won the fans' respect with his incredible energy and never say
die attitude.
Dundee started
his career overseas, working in Australia for legendary
promoter Jim Barnett. Born in Scotland, Dundee
worked in the circus as a tight rope walker prior to his days
as a wrestler. Dundee's balance and agility would prove
to two of his biggest assets in the ring. After working
for Barnett, Dundee began wrestling in the United States.
Bill Dundee
worked in many promotions and territories
including Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW), Central
States Wrestling (CSW), and the American Wrestling Association
(AWA). However the territory where Dundee made
himself a legend was in the Championship Wrestling
Association (CWA) in Memphis. In the CWA, Dundee became
known as "Superstar" Bill Dundee after winning the fans'
hearts with his spirited matches and promos. Early on in
his CWA career, Dundee dressed up similarly to Elvis, complete
with fancy sunglasses and ring attire.
Dundee found
incredible success in Memphis as both a singles and tag team
competitor. Without question, Dundee's most successful
tag team partnership was with Jerry "The
King" Lawler. The partnership was a difficult one and both
men found themselves as enemies just as often as allies.
One such situation occured during a match between Lawler and
Dundee when they wrestled for a shot at AWA World Champion
Nick Bockwinkel. During the match, Lawler tried to use a
chain to finish Dundee off only to have Dundee grab the chain
from Lawler. Dundee refused to use the chain on the man
he thought was his friend only to fall to Lawler after Lawler
blasted him with brass knuckles. The two men then began
a lengthy feud in CWA.
Whether he wrestled as a babyface
or a heel, Dundee considered himself second to none.
When aspiring manager Jim Cornette
tried to sign Dundee to a contract, Dundee refused Cornette's
offer because Cornette had tried first with Jerry Lawler and
been rebuffed.
As a babyface, Dundee was always
willing to help out his friends. During a Southern
Tag Team Championship match between the teams of Steve
Keirn/Terry Taylor and Sweet Brown Sugar/Bobby Eaton, Dundee
threw in the towel when Keirn's arm became trapped in the ring
rope and his opponents beat his elbow relentlessly with a
chair. After the injury sidelined Keirn, Dundee teamed
with Terry Taylor to gain a measure of revenge on Eaton,
Sugar, and manager Jimmy
Hart.
During one of
their periods as tag team partners, Dundee and Lawler were
involved in the famous Tupelo Concession Brawl. Bill and
Jerry were defending the Southern Tag Team Championship
against Larry Latham and Wayne Ferris when the action spilled
out of the ring. All four men battled near the
concession area, beating each other with whatever was readily
available including containers of mustard, mop handles, and
even a popcorn machine!
One of
Dundee's most unusual opponents was "Exotic" Adrian
Street. Street attacked Dundee after Dundee won an
elimination tag team match in which Street was
participating. Street was joined by the mercenary
Apocalypse who saved Street from a Dundee beating. "The
Superstar" teamed up with Terry Taylor to battle Street and
Apocalypse but Street's manager Jim
Cornette and Street's valet Miss Linda interfered.
Dundee and Taylor won the match but they were destroyed by
Apocalypse & Street after the match with Miss Linda &
Cornette getting their licks in as well. Dundee agreed
to meet Street, Cornette, and Miss Linda in a handicap match,
figuring that he'd rather face them head-on than deal with
sneak attacks from outside.
During the mid-80's Dundee and
Lawler's tag team partnership broke apart once again and the
two men battled in what was their most intense feud
ever. This time things broke down when Dundee was
cutting a promo and he said that him and Lawler could beat any
team in CWA. The Fabulous Ones took offense to his
comment and Lawler came out to try and calm the situation
before it got out of hand. Unfortunately Dundee took
offense and he ended up challenging Lawler to a match for his
Southern Championship. and put his foreign sports car up as
incentive. Lawler didn't care about the sports car but
wanted a match with Dundee since Dundee had been causing
trouble in the Memphis area recently. Lawler and Dundee
went back and forth until opportunity arose and Dundee punched
Lawler with a chain, gaining the victory and the
pinfall. Now, Dundee would have his shot at Ric Flair's NWA World Heavyweight
Championship and to make sure, he refused to defend the title
until after his title shot (the 30 day mandatory title defense
wouldn't pass until after the match with Flair). Lawler
did everything he could to secure a title match, even
threatening to smash Dundee's sports car with a baseball
bat. However when Lawler got his title match, Dundee was
able to slip away with the Southern belt.
With the Southern Heavyweight
Championship secure, Dundee had his match with Flair to look
forward to. Unfortunately for Dundee, his cockiness got
the better of him and during a run against babyface Koko Ware,
he put his title shot against Flair up against Koko and
lost. Enraged, Dundee would interfere in Ware's match
with Flair, costing Ware the match.
While Dundee was battling Koko, his
feud with Lawler was far from over. After repeated
attempts to get Dundee in the ring, Lawler finally got Dundee
to wrestle him by agreeing to fight Dundee in a Loser Leaves
Town match. Things didn't turn out the way "The
King" had planned though. Before the match, Lawler was
injured and he had to wrestle with his face heavily bandaged
and with his vision severely impaired. Dundee shocked
the world when he pinned Lawler which meant that Dundee's
much hated for was now banned from the CWA for six
months.
During this time, Dundee had formed a
partnership with "Nature Boy" Buddy Landell and "Dirty" Dutch
Mantel. With Lawler gone, the three ran roughshod
over the CWA, winning titles and trying to end the careers of
whoever they could. At one point, Dundee and Landell
beat up Jerry Jarret's teenage son Jeff
Jarrett, nearly blinding Jerry when he came to his son's
aid. Finally, promoter Eddie Marlin lifted the
suspension against Lawler, feeling that only Lawler could stop
Dundee. "The King" returned to the CWA and teamed
with Dutch Mantel (who left Landell and Dundee after finding
out they were fair weather friends) to get his revenge on
Dundee
Eventually though, Dundee and Lawler reconciled enough
where they teamed up once again. This time they reached
the pinnacle of tag team success by winning the AWA World Tag
Team Championship from Soldat Ustinov and Doug Somers.
Dundee would go on to have two world tag team championship
reigns in the AWA with "The King".
As Dundee's career began to wind down, he took a new role
as Sir William, the manager/valet for Lord Steven Regal
in World Championship Wrestling (WCW). Dundee continues to wrestle in
Memphis and has a son Jamie Crookshanks who is also a
wrestler. |
