Although his life ended
abruptly at the age of 30, Jay Youngblood left an impressive
legacy behind in the squared circle. While he was
successful in singles competition, Youngblood excelled as a
tag team wrestler. Youngblood's greatest fame was
attained in Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling (MACW) where
he teamed up with a variety of partners and usually won tag
team gold as a result.
Without a doubt, Youngblood's
greatest partnership was with the legendary Ricky Steamboat. Youngblood and
Steamboat would go on to win the NWA World Tag Team Titles on
five separate occasions. Youngblood and Steamboat
were true tag team specialists with a fast
paced exciting style that won them many fans. The duo
were involved in some of the hottest feuds during their reigns
(and runs for the titles).
After Ricky Steamboat retired from
wrestling, Youngblood began teaming with his brother Mark
Youngblood and continued to be successful up until his
accidental death in 1985. During a match in New Zealand,
Youngblood reportedly suffered a ruptured spleen and then
suffered three heart
attacks. |
