While many wrestling fans know that Mel Gibson’s post-apocalyptic film "The Road Warrior" inspired the legendary Road Warriors with their name, they may not be aware of another character whose name came from the much celebrated action film.  The character of Humungus was a villain in "The Road Warrior" and he would prove to be equally villainous in the world of professional wrestling.  At least seven different wrestlers have wrestled as Lord Humongous (including Sid Vicious and Bull Buchanan).  While the character of Lord Humongous never appeared in a national promotion such as the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) or World Championship Wrestling (WCW), his popularity has kept the character active for over twenty years and he continues to appear on the independent circuit.

Lord Humongous first appeared in Memphis wrestling around 1984.  Jimmy Hart brought Humongous in to destroy Jerry "The King" Lawler and for a while, it looked like Hart had finally found the wrestler who could destroy his long-time nemesis.  Lawler was destroyed in his first match with Humongous.  Lord Humongous was a monstrous size wrestler with a powerful finishing hold, a variation of the Cobra Clutch. As if that wasn't enough of a challenge, Humongous wore a hockey mask into the ring which protected his head from just about any kind of offense.  After two unsuccessful battles with Humongous, Lawler began wearing a hockey mask of his own and he eventually regained the Southern Heavyweight title from Humongous.

Humongous would continue to appear in regional promotions such as the World Wrestling Association and Southeastern Championship Wrestling before he showed up in Mid-South Wrestling (MSW).  Lord Humongous was managed by Sir Oliver Humperdink in MSW where he engaged in a memorable feud with Jake "The Snake" Roberts.  At one point during his feud with Humongous, Jake would take up the hockey mask just as Jerry Lawler had

Lord Humongous returned to Memphis wrestling for some time.  Since then, the character has appeared in indie promotions and will no doubt continue to appear as long as the character is popular.
